One of the classes I have gotten the most out of during my M.Ed. at uOttawa is surely EDU 5190, Introduction to Research in Education.
At the beginning, I thought I would detest this class, but I ended up really benefiting from and enjoying it.
Prior to taking EDU 5190, I had a vague notion of how educational research might be carried out, but understood very little about differentiating between various research methodologies.
It was fascinating learning about qualitative, quantitative and mixed methodologies. Since taking this class, I now read online journal articles in a different way. It is easier for me to understand how studies were carried out and to assess their validity. In the past, I would typically skip over the "study methodology" section. It usually felt like I was reading an unfamiliar foreign language.
Indeed, I think this kind of class would have been beneficial at the undergraduate level, considering the countless number of studies we had to examine and write about.
