The
article, “Coming Down from the Clouds: On Academic Writing”, talks about whether or
not academic writing should avoid complex parlance and keep itself easy to
understand for broader public readers. After reading this article, I thought that
a reader has a right of disliking specialized terms that occur in physics,
medicine or geography related academic papers. However, you cannot deny the
value of these specialized terms to the professions working in these fields. In
accordance with the old sayings that “nothing is perfect” and “there are two
sides to every coin”, I believe that each style of writing has its own advantages
and shortcomings. For example, news articles usually have a striking title to attract
readers’ attention, and they are also written in an explicit and direct way to
describe what happened, who the participants were, where something happened, and
why something happened. However, news articles are sometimes bias and reveal
only some parts of the reality of what happened. Academic writing consists of a
lot of specialized terms that confuse public readers and are difficult to read.
However, these papers have their own teaching significance and can help professionals
to make improvements on their work. I do not think that it is a good idea to standardize
every style of writing (novels, academic papers, poetry, and the things alike);
instead, we should accept their differences and diversity.
