One of the news report I read recently is titled “Twice as many girls as boys will never start school, say UNESCO ahead International Women’s Day.” It is said that almost 16 million girls between the ages 6 and 11 will never get the chance to learn to read or write in primary school compared to about eight million boys, especially in areas like Arab States, sub-Saharan Africa and South and West Asia. Gender inequality and discrimination remain big problems for the well-being of girls and women who live in those places. My first reaction after reading this piece of news is shocked. Then I start to think why these places? Why the situation isn’t getting better? We’ve been talking about gender disparities for years yet never reach a satisfied ending. Even in developed countries, gender inequality still happens, not to mention developing or undeveloped areas. In my opinion, the priority of people in developing or undeveloped areas is to be financially and materialistically content. If their physiological needs are not met, who cares about gender inequality? Furthermore, they live their lives under the male hierarchy society for generations after generations, it’s hard to make changes when they still need to dependent on their male partners. I do agree it is a big problem need to be fixed, but what’s more urgent is to help them make their living places and conditions better.
