While reading about
Wittgenstein, I was shocked to know of how he used
physical punishments on students, but I was also attracted by some ways of his
teaching. The article described that Wittgenstein brought his own microscope to
share with students in class, talked about constellations with students at
night, and travelled together with students to Vienna . All of these made his teaching alive
and could increase students’ intellectual curiosity. Also, an example mentioned
in the article described that Wittgenstein wanted to adopt a boy and send him
to study in Vienna
because of the boy’s learning potential and intelligence. However, his
intention was refused by the boy’s parents, which was also interesting to me. I
am not sure if it was a good choice for the boy to go to Vienna , but the example inspires me to think
about the connections among students, parents and educators. I feel that
sometimes both parents and teachers strongly hold their own ideas about how
students can be successful, but both of them may lack understandings of
students’ difficulties and potential in learning. Also, sometimes parents’
expectations of school teaching and educators’ expectations of parental
education cannot be matched very well, which also detrimentally influence
students’ studies and development. There is no doubt that both parental
education and school teaching play a key role in students’ studies and even in
students’ course of life. Therefore, how these two important elements can work
well with each other and how parents and teachers can establish and sustain
positive connections should always be one of issues focused in the field of
education.
