Blog entry #4 - TESL Certification

Wouldn't it be great if there was a Master's concentration at the University of Ottawa that led to a form of TESL certification?
One of the MA programs at Carleton University in Applied Linguistics satisfies the requirement of TESL Ontario.  Recognition from TESL Ontario is necessary to teach LINC (Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada).
I've met many people in the M.Ed. Second Language Education concentration who are interested in teaching English to adults.
Giving students the option to pursue TESL certification would certainly make the Education department at uOttawa more enticing.

TESL Certificate is a program that provides a real help towards teaching methodology and strategies. It bridges the 'gap' between teaching ESL in Canada and is equally helpful for teaching overseas. After this certificate, a candidate becomes eligible to apply for ESL, EAP teaching.
Whereas, TESL Certification is the membership certificate (License) that is issued for 5 years but has to be renewed every year for an amount of fee. That makes a candidate eligible for teaching in LINC and similar language programs that are funded by the Federal government.

This certification filters out the a majority of 'teacher-candidates' whose first language is not English. The requirement for this certification is either a score of 7 in each skill on IELTS, or 87% in MELAB exam etc, but as far as I know the bar has been set very high, on purpose.
