Blog Entry #4 - ADHD Not a Real Disease

After reading this article, I cannot help but remind myself of a passage I read in Einstein's biography about how American news blows everything out of proportion. Just like last week's article about "What a million syllabuses can teach us" (which it didn't), this week's article does not specify WHY ADHD is not a real disease. Instead, it concentrates on the drug aspect, and whether we should be providing Ritalin, Adderall or Vyvanse to children. That said, I think writers should seriously relearn how to appropriately title their articles.

Furthermore, after reading some of the top comments in the article, I realise quickly that some of them haven't even read the article. Instead, they probably focused on the title itself without reading and starts blasting Dr. Perry.

I won't hide it, I agree with the article. To anyone who has not read it yet, the post states that providing some "mind-altering medications" is quite dangerous for children, both physically and psychologically. Nevertheless, doctors and family physicians are increasingly prescribing them to children who have trouble with focus. To that extent, I am quite certain the majority of the population can agree that these drugs can be quite harmful to a person's health.

Where I do not agree with Dr. Perry is to justify why ADHD is not a real thing BECAUSE of the drugs. I consider myself no expert, but to believe that ADHD exists as a result of the prescription of Aderall seems like flawed logic. It is comparable to saying "I do not have a cold", even though I show all the signs and symptoms, because I am not taking cold medicine.

Having worked with children for a little more than 10 years, there does appear to be separate psychological state between children with and without ADHD. However, are drugs the answer to solving ADHD? I do not believe so.
