I read an article yesterday from Ge Zhang, the principle of Suzhou New Oriental School, regarding the issues of studying abroad. I would like to share the three standards he pointed out for students who would like to study abroad and see if you have different ideas.
1. Students with poor English proficiency are not suggested to study abroad. He said that most Chinese students feel their English is not good enough to communicate with native speakers, so that they choose to hang out with people whom they are able to communicate with.
2. Students who do not have the basic sense of right and wrong are not suggested to study abroad. If they do not have the sense of right and wrong, they might make bad friends or develop bad life behaviors which are not good for their future development.
3. Students with unhealthy lifestyles are not suggested to study abroad. Since they have friends, what their friends eat, when their friends go to bed or how their friends live would all impact students' lifestyle. In order to live in the same life cycle, students would follow the same lifestyle as others.
In my opinion, I agree with all points he made, but I think it really depends on how the family education is and how students' parents teach their children. What do you guys think?
