Warning: the author uses some racey language.

On the one hand, to me it is very common since it is very competitive in China that everyone wants to get into elite colleges. Therefore, for the sake of themselves future career, most of the students are not willing to share information or give assistance to their classmates. It is not because they are not helpful to their classmates, however, they need to think about themselves prior to others' needs. On the other hand, sometimes good students think that students who do not do well on tests are not working hard enough. Good students do not want to just give their answers to questions. There is a saying in China that you don't just give someone fish, but teach the person how to fish. Sometimes it is nicer to have method to solve questions rather than just have the answers.
